Simulations of Electron Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

چکیده
We present numerical simulations of electron magnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) and electron reduced MHD (ERMHD) turbulence. Comparing scaling relations, we find that both EMHD and ERMHD turbulence show similar spectra and anisotropy. We develop new techniques to study anisotropy of EMHD turbulence. Our detailed study of anisotropy of EMHD turbulence supports our earlier result of k‖ ∝ k ⊥ scaling, where k‖ and k⊥ are wavenumbers parallel and perpendicular to (local) mean magnetic field, respectively. We find that the high-order statistics show a scaling that is similar to the SheLeveque scaling for incompressible hydrodynamic turbulence and different from that of incompressible MHD turbulence. We observe that the bispectra, which characterize the interaction of different scales within the turbulence cascade, are very different for EMHD and MHD turbulence. We show that both decaying and driven EMHD turbulence have the same statistical properties. We calculate the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of MHD and EMHD turbulence and compare them with those of interplanetary turbulence. We find that, as in the case of the solar wind, the PDFs of the increments of magnetic field strength in MHD and EMHD turbulence are well described by the Tsallis distribution. We discuss implications of our results for astrophysical situations, including the advection dominated accretion flows and magnetic reconnection. Subject headings: MHD — turbulence — solar wind

Divergence of neighboring magnetic-field lines and fast-particle diffusion in strong magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, with application to thermal conduction in galaxy clusters.
Using direct numerical simulations, we calculate the rate of divergence of neighboring magnetic-field lines in different types of strong magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. In the static-magnetic-field approximation, our results imply that tangled magnetic fields in galaxy clusters reduce the electron diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity by a factor of approximately 5-10, relative to thei...
متن کاملCascades in decaying three-dimensional electron magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
Decaying electron magnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) turbulence in three dimensions is studied via high-resolution numerical simulations. The resulting energy spectra asymptotically approach a k law with increasing RB , the ratio of the nonlinear to linear timescales in the governing equation, consistent with theoretical predictions. No evidence is found of a dissipative cutoff, consistent with non-loc...

Strong incompressible three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is investigated by means of high-resolution direct numerical simulations. The simulations show that the configuration space is characterized by regions of positive and negative cross-helicity, corresponding to highly aligned or antialigned velocity and magnetic field fluctuations, even when the average cross-helicity is zero...

The fluid-kinetic hybrid electron model for global electromagnetic gyrokinetic particle simulations has been formulated in toroidal geometry using magnetic coordinates, providing the capabilities to describe low frequency processes in electromagnetic turbulence with electron dynamics. In the limit of long wavelength and no parallel electric field our equations reduce to the ideal magnetohydrody...
متن کاملAnalytical and numerical approaches to structure functions in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
In magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, the classical theory by Kraichnan and Iroshnikov based on dimensional analysis gives a linear dependence of the exponents p = p=4 of the structure functions for the Elss asser variables z = u B. This linear behavior contradicts observations of MHD turbulence in the solar wind, where anomalous scaling was found similar as in hydrodynamic turbulence. Since the e...
